Amongst the various attraction of the city, a few must visits include Bada Bagh (Huge Garden), a collection of the cenotaphs of past rulers of the city built on a small hill lock, Amar Sagar- a small and beautiful lake adjacent to the Amar Singh Palace and Lodurva, the ancient capital of Bhatti Rajputs before Jaisalmer was formed. Visit these places and get lost in the mysteries of the past.
Jaisalmer instantly evokes a picture of magical brilliant deserts. According to a legend, Rawal Jaisal laid the foundation of the city after consulting a local hermit named Eesul. He chose the hill Trikuta to build his fort and after evaluating the vulnerability of Lodurwa, his former capital, he abandoned his old fort and capital to establish a new capital, named Jaisalmer. Apart from the numerous attractions that the city offers, there is Bada Bagh, Amar Sagar and Lodurwa which is a must visit for the tourists of the Golden City, Jaisalmer.
Bada Bagh: Over a small hill lock, it is a collection of cenotaphs (chhatris) built in memory of Jaisalmer's previous Royal rulers and their families. Bada Bagh Cenotaphs are located around 6kms from Jaisalmer. It was named as Bada Bagh because in earlier times, this land was a beautiful lush green garden amidst the desert sands and thus was chosen as the place to build chhatri in respect of the past rulers. Bada Bagh has a garden, a tank and a dam. You will find here a Govardhan Stambh which was constructed to commemorate the construction of Dam (Jait Bandh) and the tank (Jait Sar), based on the name of the person who made them.
Amar Sagar: After visiting Bada Bagh and on your way to Lodurva, Amar Sagar is a small and beautiful lake cum oasis, adjacent to the age- old Amar Singh Palace (also known as Amar Sagar Haveli). Next to the five storey palace (haveli) built in the pattern of apartments, are the large stairs leading down to Amar Sagar Lake. Beautiful and delicate murals are painted on almost every wall of the haveli. An old Shiva temple is also built in the complex.
Lodurva, the ancient capital of Bhatti Rajputs was a flourishing city but lost its significance when the Rajputs shifted their capital to Jaisalmer after ascertaining the easy vulnerability of Lodurva. Today, it is a major tourist attraction. Peacocks here are in plenty and its icing on the cake if you get lucky to see the peacock dance in the Lodurva ruins. The place is also famous for its Jain temples. Now in ruins, the Jain temples built in yellow sandstone, still manage to mesmerize you with its wall decorations. Main feature of these temples is a beautifully carved arch. The architecture of the temples is in famous Dilwara style.
