Abu Simbel Excursion Tour from Aswan will start around 0400 hour. You will be picked up from your hotel in an air conditioned coach along with an English speaking guide who will show you around. The Temple of Abu Simbel was built by Pharaoh Ramses II. The temple had two temples carved out of solid rock at a site on the west bank of the Nile south of Aswan in the land of Nubia and known today as Abu Simbel. Long before Ramses II, the site had been sacred to Hathor of Absek. The temple built by Ramses, however, was dedicated to the sun gods Amon-Re and Re-Horakhte. Because of their remote location near the Sudanese border in sourthern Egypt, the temples were unknown until their rediscovery in 1813. They were first explored in 1817 by the Egyptologist Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Abu Simbel lies south of Aswan on the western bank of the Nile, 180 miles south of the First Cataract in what was Nubia. The site was known as Meha in ancient times and was first documented in the 18th Dynasty, when Ay and Hormoheb had rock-cut chapels hewn in the hills to the south. To the north of the main temple a smaller temple was built in honor of Ramesses’ great wife, Nefertari, and the goddess Hathor. After the tour you will board your coach and will travel back to Aswan where you will be dropped at your hotel.
